What to look for
Consider the following for each player’s character and how it relates to the locations, NPCs and story hooks you’ve created so far.
What is in the character's background?
- Do they have any major life events?
- Do they know any influential people?
- Are they from an interesting location?
- Are they (or could they be) a part of any interesting organizations?
What motivates the character to adventure?
- Are they an experienced dungeoneer looking for work?
- Have they fallen on hard times and need a quick buck?
- Are they trying to save someone or something special to them?
How might the character be connected to other characters?
- Why are your players adventuring together?
- Do they share any common connections in their past, such as location, acquaintances or major events?
- Do the characters get along or do they get on each other's nerves?
But be considerate!
As the DM/GM you get to build the setting, non-playable characters and the storylines. It's okay to tailor those things to your characters, but always check-in with your players before you change something about their character to make sure they are on board with your ideas.
